Reiki is a stress reduction and relaxation technique originating from Japan and developed by Mikkao Usui in 1922. It is derived from 2 Japanese words; "Rei" which signifies God's Wisdom and "Ki" which is life-force energy. It is a kind of alternative medicine that uses palm healing, which involves the transfer of energy, or Ki via the laying of hands. In Reiki, there are two schools of practice, namely Traditional Japanese Reiki and Western Reiki. Between these two branches of Reiki, there are three forms of degrees each, which are known as First, Second, and Master degrees. With a First degree, the practitioner has the ability to heal oneself and others. After he/she progresses to the Second degree, the practitioner gains the ability of distant healing, with the utilization of specific symbols. The Master degree or Shinpiden is self-explanatory, where the practitioner can impart his knowledge and skills upon others. There are ethical principals adopted by practitioners of Reiki, which are commonly known as the Five Reiki Precepts. These are: 1. Avoid anger2. Avoid worry3. Be happy and grateful 4. Work hard5. Be good to other people When one follows these precepts, they can promote peace and harmony, and this is nearly universal across all cultures. It also works together with all other conventional medical or therapeutic modalities to aid in relieving side e! ffects a nd promoting a brisk recovery. Reiki is simple to learn and practice, as it is not really taught in the traditional sense of the word, but rather the knowledge is passed on during a Reiki class.
