Why Aromatherapy Will Give You A Great Massage Experience

Article by Tina Sherman

Aromatherapy which has been practiced since ancient times uses essential oils for the prevention and treatment of some diseases. The alternative medicine that promotes the belief that certain fragrances and aromatic smells influence our mood and brain function is called Aromatherapy.

Essential oils are always present in an aromatherapy session in fact this is the basic requirement because they are used to reduce friction between the therapists hands as he or she rubs the skin of the client. These oils are extracted from plants or plants parts via alchohol extraction, cold expression, steam distillation, and fixed oil extraction.

The product of these methods of extraction is a highly concentrated oil that shouldn't be rubbed directly onto client's skin as they may cause skin problems. Aromatherapy blend or synergy is the process of diluting these oils to reduce their potency making them perfect for our skin.

In an blend a carrier oil or massage oil is added to a combination of 3 to 5 essential oils. Lotion may also be used instead of carrier oils.

In synergy, blending is still done but the carrier oil is omitted.

Here is an example of an oil blend used for the relief of stress. Mix 5 drops of clary sage, 2 drop of lavender, and 2 drops of lemon to one ounce of sweet almond.

There are three types of therapies that make use of the power of essential oils namely, olfactory, cosmetic, and olfactory therapy. However the best way to get the benefits of essential oils is via massage.

This is because as the oil blend is massaged onto the body, the nutrients in the oil are absorbed into the skin into the different body systems thereby increasing the benefits of an ordinary massage. The oil mix gives off a scent that works by influencing the limbic system which is a portion of the brain which is responsible for influencing emotion, long-term memory, blood pressure, and heart rate.

An aromatherapy session moisturizes the skin as well as:

Reduces the formation! of scar tissue, pain, and swelling in the muscles during injuries or over exertion;Relieves you of stress and insomnia;Promotes blood circulation and formation of white blood cells;Decreases feelings of anxiety, depression, and tension;Relaxes the muscles and makes the healing of strained muscles and ligaments faster.

Despite the many benefits of aromatherapy massage, you are advised against this if you have unhealed skin diseases, rashes, epilepsy (the aroma might trigger convulsions), open wounds, and asthma.
