The Cab Ride

I arrived at the address and honked the horn. After waiting a few minutes, I walked to the door and knocked. "Just a minute", answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90′s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940′s movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, and no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware. "Would you carry my bag out to the car?" she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, and then returned to assist the woman. Zoo Invites Community to Help Select Snow Leopard Cubs’ Names

On June 14, the Rosamond Gifford Zoo welcomed its first snow leopard cubs in 14 years. The public was invited to submit name suggestions for the cubs and 563 people submitted names into the contest. The Rosamond Gifford Zoo is pleased to announce the finalists in the snow leopard cub naming contest. The finalists are: Rambu (ROM-boo)& Dongari (DUN-gar-ee) Submitted by Ann Bauer, 22, of Akron, Ohio and Julie Overacker, 49, of Central Square, N.Y. Rambu means "strong" in Sherpa, the language of the people who inhabit the Nepalese Himalayan mountains. Dongari is a mountain pass in Nepal. Sabu (SAH-boo)& Raj (r ah j) Submitted by Maria Padalino, 5, of Liverpool, N.Y. Sabu is Tibetan for "snow leopard." In order to make our dreams come true, we must take action rather than simply wishing for what we want. There is a popular misconception that we might be able to just wish our dreams into being. Maybe on some other level of consciousness this is the case, but here on earth what we need to do is take action in our lives. Vision is an important companion to our efforts, but it can't accomplish anything all by itself. When we focus on what we want and ask for what we want, we are initiating a conversation with the universe. Our desires, passionately defined and expressed, bring about valuable and relevant opportunities, which we then respond to by either taking or leaving them. Most of us have encountered a person in our lives who can accurately be referred to as a know-it-all. Not everybody we meet will like us and it is ok to move into acceptance rather than trying to make somebody like you. It is not necessarily a pleasant experience, but there will be times in our lives when we come across people who do not like us. As we know, like attracts like, so usually when they don't like us it is because they are not like us. Rather than taking it personally, we can let them be who they are, accepting that each of us is allowed to have different perspectives and opinions. When we give others that freedom, we claim it for ourselves as well, releasing ourselves from the need for their approval so we can devote our energy toward more rewarding pursuits. While approval from others is a nice feeling, when we come to depend on it we may lose our way on our own path.
