You’re Not Losing Your Mind, You’re Just Stressed Out!

By ThirdAge.com | Healthy Living Worried Couple Since this is Brain Awareness Week, ThirdAge decided to have a look at recent research about the aging brain. We ran across riffs on all the usual advice including diet, exercise, crossword puzzles, "neuroplasticity," and the differences between the gray matter of men and women -- but one finding riveted our attention. If you've been having what seem to be "senior moments" lately, getting older may not be the main culprit after all. Instead, the perpetrator could be constant stress. Write your relationship success story. Find 50+ Singles on BetterDate.com. Join Today! A study, done at the State University of New York at Buffalo by Zhen Yan, Ph.D., and colleagues and published in the journal "Neuron," showed that when your stress hormone cortisol spikes and then remains high, your prefrontal cortex is disturbed to the point that memory problems can occur. Should You Do a Juice Cleanse?

Image
By Glamour Magazine Courtesy of Cooler Cleanse By Jessica Girdwain, Glamour magazine Cleanses are red-hot with celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Miranda Kerr, Blake Lively and Nicole Richie, but are they healthy? Three experts tell whether doing a cleanse is right for you. "Go for it. Cleanses come in many forms-some are just juices, others are restricted-eating plans that last a day or even several weeks. But the goal is the same: to help your body flush out toxins and jump-start weight loss. Some aren't helpful, because they are too low in calories or omit key nutrients. But a good cleanse, one that's organic and vitamin-rich, acts as a reset button to help transform unhealthy eating habits and infuses your body with nutrients. A lot of my clients who find cleanses appealing have been subsisting on sugar and caffeine-they're actually somewhat malnourished! They find that an organic-juice cleanse makes them feel sharper and more aware of bad habits that were sabotag

Is Stretching Before a Workout Bad for You?

Image
By Details Magazine | Healthy Living by Mike Dawson , DETAILS Static stretching--flexing and holding a position, like bending over and touching your toes, has earned a bad rap lately. Sometimes it seems like the entire fitness universe, especially personal trainers, pooh-pooh this practice before a workout. They say it weakens your muscles and may increase your chance of injury. See also: Hollywood's Top Vanity Muscles This sentiment is understandable: It's based on a solid, and widely read, 2008 University of Nevada Las Vegas study that described how college athletes lost about three percent of their leg power if they static stretched before a super-short "explosive" sprint. Boom. Fact. Right? Hold on. You're not a college athlete whose three percent power loss may cost him an inch in a 40-yard dash. Our "performance" stakes are much lower-like a weights workout or a three-miler through the park (assuming it's sunny). Most of us will never noti

Is Our Diet Depleting the Planet?

Image
Everyone has heard of Global Warming, but Global Depletion is much less known. As vast as Global Warming may seem, it is only a small piece in the growing puzzle of Global Depletion, which refers to the loss of all of Earth’s renewable and non-renewable resources. One of the few books that captures the whole scope of Global Depletion, instead of focusing on issues that branch off from the real problem, is Comfortably Unaware, by Dr. Richard A. Oppenlander. This book reaches deep into the heart of the issue, where society seems to avoid looking. While unaware of the issue of Global Depletion, many of us are not even aware of the true cause of Global Warming, which has been given such publicity. While carbon dioxide is allocated the majority of the blame for climate change, Oppenlander reveals that “Our current food choices detrimentally affect climate change and global warming more so than do all the cars, planes, trucks, buses, and trains used worldwide.” It is not our lights being l

Overreacting? Your Kid Will Too

“My children are lunatics,” said a beleaguered mother, and friend of mine, when I paid her a visit last spring. And she was pretty spot on with her assessment. Her children, while enormously cute in photographs, were destructive hellion children in the flesh. They were pulling toys out of one each other’s hands and then smashing things against the wall and stomping on jigsaw puzzles as if they were an invading army of red ants. And the noise, the noise…the noise. This mother, who I did sympathize with…greatly, did her best to meet the chaos with (hollow) threats and yells of her own, but she really couldn’t compete. The lunatics had taken over the asylum. A few weeks later I had the pleasure of spending a few days with another family and witnessing the relative harmony of their ways. The two girls were playing cooperatively with one another and maintaining their toys, as well as an acceptable noise level. It was parenthood and family life in its most ideal form. Upon questioning the m

Self-Healing Vs. Conventional Medicine

Image
I was working at the Owning Pink Center, the integrative medicine practice I founded in Mill Valley, California, when I met Sandrine, who had been diagnosed with endometrial cancer, an often-curable type of cancer of the lining of the uterus. Her doctors moved quickly to get her scheduled for a hysterectomy, which is standard treatment for someone with endometrial cancer. But Sandrine didn’t want treatment. It’s not that she had a death wish. In fact, she had never been happier in her life, and she was doing everything within her power to cure her cancer, including radically changing her diet, meditating, and engaging in guided visualization. Cancer, she said, was the best thing that ever happened to her. But her decision to opt out of treatment didn’t go over well with her doctor, who promptly dismissed her and insisted she find a more “open-minded” doctor who would be willing to support her self-healing journey, which is how Sandrine wound up in my office. She had read some articles

Know Your Techniques: Steaming Vegetables

Image
By YumSugar Lately I've found myself craving the simple, unadulterated flavors of steamed vegetables. Steaming is arguably one of the healthiest ways to cook vegetables, but that doesn't mean it's boring. Not only do properly steamed vegetables retain most of their nutrients, but the brightly colored vegetables are incredibly appetizing and full of flavor. There are a few tricks to perfect steaming - and they don't necessarily involve having to own a steamer! The Basics Firstly, the water should be boiling before you add the vegetables to your steamer basket to ensure even temperature throughout the cooking process. Try not to crowd the steamer with too many vegetables and take care to either properly layer your steamer basket according to cooking time or just cook up several batches. Firm vegetables like potatoes and carrots take longer to steam and should be placed toward the bottom of the steamer basket, while green beans and spinach take much less time and can be a
