ACL Injuries- The way back with Water Therapy
Article by Crystal Ware
Whether sports are a hobby or a profession, recovering from an injury can be devastating. When that injury is an ACL tear, it can literally end your life in sports if you don't take the necessary steps to ensure proper rehabilitation. What that rehabilitation is depends entirely on what type of ACL injury you have, a partial tear or a complete separation. The main thing to remember is that when properly looked after you can more often than not return to your desired sport. Long term or permanent damage is done when not enough time or proper care is given or a return to exercise happens too soon, or without proper thought to what type of exercise can help rather than further hurt the site.
The anterior cruciate ligament is essential for proper movement and receives more injuries than any other ligament in the body. Injuries can be sustained in many ways including direct impact or over extenuation to the back or side. Without the protection of the ACL the knee cannot function properly. After a tear, particularly one sever enough to require surgery, a brace is often used to stabilize the knee during healing. During the slow return to physical activity, water therapy such as use of a water treadmill can be extremely beneficial as they are none weight bearing, yet serve to strengthen. Water Therapies have gained increased popularity in the last decade due to their ability to show positive results without the damage of impact on a joint.
When dealing with an ACL tear, water therapy can play a very important role, in fact, many professional athletes have home gyms equip with everything from a lap pool or water treadmill to a whirlpool or Jacuzzi type tub. These types of equipment are used not only in therapy, but also in training which is part of the reason for their popularity; flexibility in usage. During the return to activity phase of your recovery from a serious ACL injury, these therapies can help in allowing you to stretch and flex the ligament with consistent low resistance based on ! your spe ed of movement and little to no impact.
The most important thing to remember while recovering from an ACL injury or any sports related injury is to listen to your body and make sure you understand the need of proper rehabilitation. Without it, you may turn a simple injury into a life long problem.
