It’s Medicine, not Science Fiction

If you check out any recent medical journal you see a plethora of new technologies and emerging sciences geared towards our heath, wellness, and healing. Much to our benefit it seems that everywhere you look someone is coming up with a new way to fight an old problem. One of those problems is the sharp increase that orthopedic hospitals are seeing in hip or knee replacement patients. With our aging population and a raise in osteoarthritis and obesity orthopedic surgeons are coming up with new and exciting technologies to make these surgeries less invasive and more accurate. Since Dr. Lawrence Dorr of Los Angeles preformed the first robotic hip replacement in the USA it has become a reliable though costly option. No, patients aren't given robotic hips reminiscent of The Bionic Man, it is simply a process in which the surgeon's skills are augmented by a surgeon - interactive robotic arm and a technique of mapping the patients actual hip and bringing it up 3-D during the procedure. The 3-D image based on a CT scan allows the surgeon a view of the affected area that previously was only accessible for very intricate specialized procedures. The preprogrammed surgical plan has nearly eliminated incorrect placement which can lead to chronic pain or an implanted joint wearing out well before its time. Though many are hesitant when first hearing about it, make no mistake, there is an orthopedic surgeon letting that robotic arm what to do.Despite this technology being ground breaking with regards to hip replacement surgeries, that doesn't mean it's new. Orthopedic hospitals around the country have already been using the MAKO image guidance technology for partial knee replacements with great success. The only down side is of course cost. Most orthopedic hospitals simply cannot afford the equipment involved despite the positive outcome for patience. Hopefully one day this will no longer be the issue. One day patient care and science and medical breakthroughs will trump cost and we will all reap the benefits.!
