7 Issues to Consider & 4 Reasons Why to Buy Diabetic Shoes

Article by Crystal Robertson

Diabetic shoes are therapeutic footwear which are specially designed to reduce the chances of skin breakdown among diabetics who also suffer from a co-existing foot disease. Doctors usually recommend some patients to wear a pair of diabetic shoes to help maintain good health and feet comfort as well. Diabetic footwear for men and women alike are usually deeper and wider than the normal shoes in order for it to make room for special diabetic insoles.

So how do you choose the perfect diabetic shoes?

1. Make sure that your shoes have proper ventilation. Good ventilation allows the feet to reduce heat and dampness. When ventilation is absent, you can sweat very frequently facilitating the growth of bacteria and thus, increasing the risks of infection. A footwear with good air circulation will not only help you with diabetes. It can also help prevent pressure ulcers and encourage good blood circulation as it allows the skin to breathe.

2. Choose one with a toe and heel curving slightly as this forces your feet to be in good balance when you walk.

3. The shoe's toe box should be durable and high. This will help prevent injury to sensitive toes.

4. The footwear should be seamless and lightweight. This will help you avoid infection, blisters and calluses.

5. It should also have a flexible or elastic fit to prevent your shoes from sliding off your feet.

6. If you can, choose a pair of shoes made from organic or natural materials as this allows healthy air circulation.

7. Do not settle for something which feels tight. Choose one which gives your toes enough "wiggle room."

But is opting for a diabetic shoes really important? Is wearing ordinary footwear not enough? There are several reasons why diabetics are prone to a lot of foot problems. This includes:

1. Poor circulation - When you are diabetic, your arteries are prone to becoming rigid and getting blocked failing to bring adequate oxygen, nutrients, blood flow and medications to the injured ar! eas of y our body. This causes delay in healing body diseases or illnesses.

2. Nerve damage - Another illness which can be caused by diabetes is neuropathy, which causes the loss of feeling in your feet. When this happens, you lose the ability to feel something when your foot is hit by something or when it gets injured. In most cases, diabetics accidentally step into a sharp object, have a blooded foot and still not feel anything. This can lead to a more dangerous foot abnormality - foot ulcer.

3. Greater risk of infection - Your white blood cells - those which are responsible to fight infections - can become sluggish when your blood sugar goes beyond 250 mg/dL. This means that you become prone to infections.

4. Excess weight - If you find it difficult to check and reach for your feet, then checking on them regularly can be a problem. If you have diabetes, it is very important that you check your feet diligently from time to time to find out if small injuries are present.

So if you are diabetic or are prone to becoming one, beat this disease as soon as you can by wearing a good pair of diabetic sandals.
