Relax With Aromatherapy

Article by Tony Marks

There's a whole new world out there for you with aromatherapy. Whether you are feeling washed out from a hectic day and need to unwind, or need a little pick-me-up to get you through the day, there's an essential oil out there for you.

Essential oils can be mixed together or used individually depending on the reason you want to use it. Each oil has its own unique power. For example, Basil can be used as a pick-me-up, to put a spring into your step whereas Vetivert will help you to unwind and relax.

Aromatherapy works by inhaling the aromas taken from plants; and it's these aromas that help to change a person's mood or state of mind. These volatile plant oils trigger nerve endings in the nose that in turn stimulate the brain. The easiest way to experience these mood changing effects is by using a diffuser or burner. Alternatively, oils can be massaged directly into the skin for certain treatments such as sore muscles.

You can use four main methods; all are effective for your needs:

Put some drops of oil in your bath

Add oils to your room diffuser according to instructions

Use some oil for a massage

You can add essential oils to water in a spray bottle and use as a room freshener

You can use the oils neat in the bath, just add a few drops of oil to your bath water. If you fancy a massage you will need to mix the oil with a carrier oil such as Jojoba. Remember: never use an essential oil neat on the skin as it will burn. To use as an air freshener the oils will need to be mixed with either water or a combination of water and a high proof alcohol such as Vodka which helps the fragrance last longer. Alternatively you can simply add a few drops to water in a diffuser or burner.

If you are a candle lover then you can buy candles. They not only release the oils, but give a great glow and feel to any room. Don't be fooled when buying them that they don't smell very much. Their aroma is only released once lit and the wax begins to melt. Fragrant candles ! smell ni ce but don't confuse them with aromatherapy candles, you won't get the same relaxing efffects...

You can make your own candles too. This way not only is it fun but you can get the mix of oils that you want. Adding a few drops of essential oil to the molten wax that gathers on top of a fragrant-free candle when burning is an easy way to get the same effect.

There are many essential oils that you can choose from and mix them in many combinations to suit your needs. Used correctly, they can put you at peace and bring happiness into the house. If you don't sleep well, putting some oil on your pillow you will help induce a good night's sleep. Mixing a combination of oils, aromatherpay can sooth sore muscles and arthritic joints... It's that easy!
